The BCCI has officially announced the Indian ODI squad for the upcoming tour of England, naming young batter Shubman Gill as the captain. Explosive middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as his deputy for the high-profile series. Senior legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also feature in the squad, making this series a crucial stepping stone for India's preparations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The tour is scheduled to feature five T20Is and three ODI matches.
Shreyas Iyer, who has already been handed the captaincy for the T20I leg, will shift into a supportive role under Gill for the fifty-over format. In a surprising turn of events, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has missed out on a spot in the ODI setup despite hitting a magnificent century in the third ODI against Afghanistan. Jaiswal had initially broken into the squad as a replacement for the then-injured Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, India's T20I plans have hit a minor roadblock with spinner Varun Chakravarthy being ruled out of the upcoming Ireland T20I series due to an injury. Although he was selected for both the Ireland and England tours, he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. His participation in the England series remains up in the air and will depend strictly on clearance from the medical team.
